New Volunteer Workshops Scheduled

Are you interested in helping scientists monitor the local impact of global climate change? The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the San Diego Natural History Museum are working together to collect data on the leafing and flowering of local plant species. These data will be shared with nationwide research projects such as Project BudBurst and the National Phenology Network. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in making regular observations of native plant species in their neighborhoods. Learn more at one of the following introductory workshops:

Local Nature Walks Provide Native Plant Info

Attention San Diego Phenology Network volunteers (and other nature enthusiasts)! Many local organizations offer a variety of nature walks across the county. These casual hikes, led by knowledgeable guides, provide a great overview of local flora and fauna. If you can’t tell a sagebrush from a sumac, these hikes will have you feeling like an expert in no time.

Tijuana Estuary
Every 2nd and 4th Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Come and discover the richness that unfolds around the Visitor Center, be it upland plant adaptations or the significance of our estuarine habitat. Walks begin at the Visitor Center. All ages welcome. No reservations required. Free.

Mission Trails Regional Park
Saturdays, 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM
Join an MTRP Trail Guide on a free guided nature walk from the Visitor Center and learn about the history, geology, plants, animals and ecology of the park. Trail Guides choose from three trails. Walks may also include the Native Plant Garden near the Visitor Center. Walks are free, open to the public with no reservations required.

San Elijo Lagoon
Saturdays 10:00 AM
The Conservancy offers a guided nature walk with a trained naturalist starting at the nature center (2710 Manchester Avenue). Free.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
Weekends and holidays, 10:00 AM and 2:00PM
Guided tours for the general public leave from the Visitor Center (The Lodge).

San Diego Natural History Museum: Canyoneers Guided Nature Walks
Various dates and times.
Canyoneers are San Diego Natural History Museum volunteers trained to teach appreciation of plants and animals in southern California. Open to the public; no reservations are required.

Climate Quest Summer Camp

During the week of July 20-24 a group of fifth and sixth grade students attended a weeklong Climate Quest summer camp at the Fleet. The students learned about greenhouse gases, calculated their carbon footprints, investigated alternative energy sources, and explored some of the local and global impacts of climate change. At the end of the week, the students created 30-second public service announcements about climate change.

Phenology Workshop at Torrey Pines

On Monday March 30th a group of volunteers joined the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the San Diego Natural History Museum for a plant identification workshop at Torrey Pines State Reserve. The workshop was part of an ongoing citizen science project designed to increase our understanding of the local impacts of climate change. For the past few weeks, a group of eager volunteers has been observing and recording the timing of plant flowering across San Diego County. The current trends in flowering will be compared to historical data from the San Diego Natural History Museum’s plant collections.
